RED, WHITE & YOU

CELEBRATING AMERICA 250

A 6 WEEK CELEBRATION OF AMERICA’S ANNIVERSARY

Red, White & You is Kids Place Lex’s celebration of America’s 250th anniversary—a six-week hands-on journey through American art, music, history and performance for children ages 6-12. Funded by the Kentucky Arts Council as part of the America 250 commemoration and hosted at Faith Lutheran Church, each week brings a new piece of America into the room. Children paint their own flag artwork and learn the proper way to fold the flag. They create a collaborative mural connecting them to the American quilting tradition. They learn traditional folk songs and experience traditional Appalachian storytelling from The Old Woman of the Mountains—a gifted performer who carries the ancient oral tradition of mountain storytelling into the room. They learn the sheer joy of line dancing. And they close the session with a very special historical guest—Daniel Boone himself.

The session culminates in a final exhibition and performance where families and the general public are invited to see the work and celebrate what the children have created.
